Shiffrin wins World Cup season finale in Andorra

Mikaela Shiffrin won her 14th World Cup race of the season in Sunday’s season finale, a giant slalom in Andorra.

After winning the first run by a wide margin, Shiffrin eventually edged out Norway’s Thea Louise Stjernesund by a very narrow 0.06 seconds, with Canadian Valerie Grenier in third.

Skiing conditions in bright sunshine with temperatures at 3C were perfect for a 330m vertical drop on hard snow from the starter gate at 2167m altitude, high enough to retain some natural snow

Three of the pre-race favorites were eliminated in the first run as Slovak Petra Valhova, Olympic champion Sarah Hector of Sweden and Federica Brigone of Italy all fell through the gate.

The 28-year-old from Colorado earned a career-record 88th win and 14th of the season.

Shiffrin received her fifth overall Crystal Globe two weeks ago.
