The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to terms with former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Javon Hargrave on a four-year, $84 million contract with $40 million guaranteed. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports,
With the deal, the 49ers are adding the NFL’s top defensive free agent to the league’s No. 1 defense from last season. Hargrave, 30, anchored Philadelphia’s interior line in 2022 while notching 11 sacks, 16 quarterback hits and 10 tackles for loss. He made the Pro Bowl last season after posting 7.5 sacks, nine tackles for loss and 18 quarterback hits.
A day after the defensive tackle, the 30-year-old Hargrave came to the deal Daron Payne hit the market for interior linemen with a four-year, $90 million contract to remain with the Washington Commanders. Hargrave will join a defensive line that already includes All-Pro Nick Bosa along with Javon Kinlaw and Eric Armstead. Defensive end Samson Ebukam has been earmarked for free agency.
The Eagles now have a void to fill with a defense that led the NFL with 70 sacks last season on its way to the Super Bowl. Hargrave was one of four Eagles defenders in 2022 to match double-digit sacks.
