Grizzlies’ Ja Morant enters counseling program after incidents, still no timetable for return

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant entered a counseling program in Florida on Monday after a series of incidents, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Tim McMahon.

Morant has been away from the team for the last 10 days and there is still no timetable for his return.

It is unclear what type of counseling program Morant specifically entered, or how long he will be there.

Morant has been involved in several notable and troubling incidents this season. Most notably, earlier this month at a Colorado nightclub hours after the team played the Denver Nuggets. Morant has not played since then. Colorado, however, is under investigation by the NBA.

Most recently, Morant assaulted a teenage girl and threatened her with a gun during a pick-up game at his home last summer. He also allegedly threatened the head of security at the Memphis Mall in a separate incident.

At the start of this season, Morant’s crew reportedly hit . Staff members claimed that someone in Morant’s slow-moving SUV aimed a red laser at them and believed the laser was attached to the gun.

Morant apologized after his incident at the Colorado nightclub, and was suspended by the team that day. He said he would take time off the team, but it was unclear for how long he would be gone or what that process would look like.

“I take full responsibility for my actions last night. I am sorry to my family, teammates, coaches, fans, partners, the city of Memphis and the entire Grizzlies organization for disappointing you,” Morant said in his initial apology. . Help and work on learning better ways to deal with stress and my overall well-being.

Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins hasn’t provided many details on that front either. He said last week that “there are definitely steps that need to be taken” before Morant can return, but he did not elaborate on what those steps were.

Jenkins said Morant would miss at least the team’s next four games, opening the door for a possible return on Friday. He was asked about it on Monday night before their game against the Dallas Mavericks, but didn’t give much of an answer.

“There’s a lot of internal dialogue going on and obviously there’s still things going on at the league level that we’re in communication with,” Jenkins said. , “Ja is fully engaged in the process and ready for whatever comes after these two games.”
