That’s why we are champions for many years, these players showed something special.”</p> <p>Guardiola praised Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi ahead of the match, hailing the Italian as one of the most influential managers of the last 20 years.</p> <p>The City coach showed his respect by reinstating several star names in his side, which narrowly missed out on a fourth league title in five years, with a 1-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday.</p> <p>Erling Haaland returned amid six changes and could take his seventh hat-trick of the season in under half an hour.</p> <p>The towing lasted five minutes on Norwegian Foden’s invitational cross.</p> <p>Haaland had a poor touch for not beating Jason Steele when he was cleared through on goal.</p> <p>He took no chances in the third time of asking as Haaland unselfishly beat Foden to convert for his 15th goal of the season.</p> <p>But after a slow start, Brighton soon began to live up to Guardiola’s billing as the champions came back on their heels.</p> <p>De Zerbi said, “In every situation, even when the situation was difficult, we did not lose our style.”</p> <p>Danny Welbeck’s free-kick hit the bar and Facundo Buonanote should have done better with his finish after pacing the City defence.</p> <p>Kaoru Mitoma also saw the equalizer for the handball go out.</p> <p>But there was no stopping Anciso’s leveller when the Paraguayan picked up Levi Colville’s pass and fired an effort into the top corner for his first goal at the Amex.</p> <p>Brighton had the ball in the net for a third time moments into the first 45 minutes, only for Welbeck to be flagged down for a pass from Mitoma.</p> <p>The second period was less packed with goaltending action, despite the electric pace of the game.</p> <p>Haaland thought he had finally scored his 53rd goal of the season when he headed in Cole Palmer’s cross 15 minutes from time.</p> <p>But a VAR review caught out City’s prolific number nine as he pulled Colville’s shirt to make room for a free header.</p> <p>Anger briefly flared on the touchline after the referee’s decision to show Guardiola a yellow card.</p> <p>There were minor injury concerns for City ahead of the FA Cup and Champions League finals next month as Phil Foden, John Stones and Bernardo Silva were substituted in the second half.</p> <p>“We have to be careful with the players we get to the final,” Guardiola said.</p> <p>But it was all smiles in the end as Guardiola and De Zerbi shared a warm embrace of mutual admiration after the full-time whistle.</p> <p>KCA / JC</p> </div> </div></div><div class=
