The build up to the 107th Indy 500 is officially upon us.

Colloquially known as “the month of May” – possibly because “May’s fortnight” doesn’t quite roll off the tongue – there will be nine practice sessions over the next 15 days, two days of qualifying followed by an entry field Not making it, the pit stop competition and of course the Indy 500 itself on Sunday, May 28th. NBC and, primarily, combine to broadcast approximately 60 hours of coverage from Peacock Speedway.

Ganassi pair top speed charts on ‘Carb Day’

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Takuma Sato and Scott Dixon continued to show their strong pace over the past two weeks, speed chart topping For Friday’s ‘Carb Day’ final exercise. Sato led 86 laps and had a top average lap speed of 227.855 mph. Dixon’s top average speed was 227.285, just .332 mph faster than Penske’s Will Power.

Legg, Rahal provided shakedown session

Katherine Legge and Graham Rahal will get an extra 15-minute practice session in addition to the rest of the field to shakedown their rebuilt cars on Thursday. Legg collided with Stephen Wilson during Monday’s practice session, sending both Wall and Wilson to the hospital with fractured vertebrae that would keep him out of the race.

Rahal, after initially failing to qualify in his usual Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda, would drive Wilson’s backup Dreyer and Reinbold Racing Chevrolets. Legg’s RLL team was able to rebuild the original chassis on his damaged car. The track will be open until 4:30-4:45 p.m. for Legg and Rahal to exit pit lane, drive the backstretch and return to the pits to ensure that Friday’s “Carb Day” finals practice Cars are working for ,

Best Bets for the 2023 Indy 500

Despite nine former winners in the field, only two, Scott Dixon and Takuma Sato, entered the weekend with better than 10-to-1 odds of victory, according to betmgm, Three Hondas and two Chevrolets are among the favourites.

Rahal to replace injured Wilson

Graham Rahal will replace Stephen Wilson in the No. 24 Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Chevrolet after the British driver broke his spine in a crash during Monday’s practice session. Rahal was dramatically escorted off the field by Rahal Letterman Lanigan teammate Jack Harvey as the session ended Sunday afternoon.

Legg, Wilson crash in Monday’s practice

The first crash of the month of May came in the seventh practice session as Katherine Legge and Stephen Wilson tangled in Turn 1 with about 50 minutes remaining in the session. Running into a bunch at the front, Legg was unable to slow his car enough and ran into the back of Wilson, sending both of them into the wall.

Wilson gave a thumbs up to the crowd as he was placed on a backboard before being taken to the infield medical center, while Legge exited his car under his own power. Track medical personnel said Wilson was communicative and in good spirits and was being transferred to an area hospital for advanced imaging.

Harvey shocks Rahal in last-chance qualifying

With five minutes remaining in Sunday’s last-chance qualifying, Jack Harvey was not in the Indianapolis 500 field. At the end of what seemed like his final run, he still wasn’t in the field of 33. But the team and Harvey decide to make one final, desperate run without the luxury of cooling the engine. Harvey crossed the line to make that final run and held off Rahal Letterman Lanigan teammate Graham Rahal by 0.004 seconds with seconds remaining on the clock.

Indy 500 Qualifying Format

There are 34 entries vying for 33 starting spots in the 107th Indianapolis 500. Qualifying is split over two days, with most of the field set during Saturday’s marathon seven-hour session. Sunday will feature sessions for the final three places – and one elimination – shootouts for the top 12 and top six polls. The average speed of the drivers on the four-lap run determines their standings.

Qualifying Day 1 – Saturday, May 20
Grid spots are off in 13-30
• After each car has had one chance in the four-lap run, they can select one of two lanes for subsequent attempts to improve their times. Lane 1 has priority track access, but teams must give up their pre-qualifying pace to enter it.

Qualifying Day 2 – Sunday, May 21
Grid Spots 1-12 & 31-33 Locked In
• The first hour of the session featured the top 12 cars, which ran with positions 7-12 assigned.
• The bottom four cars get one hour to determine who will and who will not race with 31-33 spots locked.
• Finally, the top six cars will have a 30-minute session to determine pole position from sixth.

2023 Indy 500 Weather Forecast

Entering the first week of practice for the 107th Indianapolis 500, Rain threatens to hamper two days of track running – First two sessions Tuesday, May 16 and “Fast Friday” May 19. But, this being the Midwest, conditions can change at a moment’s notice.
